Chapter Nineteen:

Xena

Xena sat on the edge of her desk with her arms crossed. One foot propped up on her chair. Odette sat in her chair next to her desk across from the skinny, ginger haired, pale skinned man in a plum suit. He smiled wide, stretching his freckles across his cheeks more. Jade eyes sparkled with delight as Odette went over his qualifications on his application for their assistant.

“You’re a communication’s major, minoring in business management, you took a year of draconic, aquatic, elvish, and even orcish. That is an impressive list, Alistair. It also says here that you interned with Johnson and Jibson, the toilet paper company over in Marvis, I hear they do pretty good sales given their lack of diverse inventory.” Odette folded the file closed in her lap, cocking her head to the right. “What I don’t understand is why you chose to work here for us?”

“I don’t understand, was my application abnormal?” Alistair blushed the same red as a tomato as he fidgeted with his own fingers in his lap.

“No, by all means, you’re qualified. But your, let’s say, pedigree is extensive. Your father is Dodger McMillian-”

“I knew it!” Xena exclaimed with bright eyes. “I thought the name was familiar. Your dad’s the most renowned paladin in King’s Fall history. He holds the record for slaying the mad dragon king of the south and for purifying the black sea of the abysmal kraken!” Xena exploded with glee. She bound off her desk into her seat. Sliding closer to Alistair, she examined his palling face. He looked nothing like his father. Dodger and Alistair both sported red hair the color of ripe carrots with freckles, but Dodger was a brick house. Shoulders wide enough and biceps big enough to arm wrestle werebears and win. Dodger McMillian was a chiseled faced hero that they wrote about in books.

Alistair sat awkwardly away from Xena with a wince for a smile. Six foot tall, scrawny with wide hands and smile, ears round and too big for his face, Alistair did not hold a single drop of his father’s appearance. Alistair laughed sheepishly, “Well, yes, he is known for that.”

“And your mother, Reece, is a healer known all over the world, they name hospitals after her.” Odette crossed one leg over the other. “So why work for us? By all things considered, you’d have a far comfier job with one of their many ventures.”

“Well a man’s got to eat, am I right?” He swallowed loudly, straightening out his posture in his seat. “I also wanted to branch out on my own. I’m not my parents or their accomplishments. I am trying to be independent.”

Odette nodded, “I understand that.”

“I mean, your father is Dean of the Warlock Academy of deathcraft. I’m far more impressed by your pedigree.” Alistair motioned at Odette.

Xena glanced at Odette and knew she was sold on the kid. Alistair may be a smidgen younger than Xena liked for their assistant, but she knew Odette liked him in the position.
